2010 Dunn Family Christmas Letter

Season’s Greetings to our family and friends spread all over the world! Another year is passing away, which means it is Christmas letter time. As we look back and ponder on what has passed this year, we know we are blessed. We are so lucky to have a beautiful home to live in, food on the table, clean water from the tap, and such great people in our lives. It was great to have family be able to visit us and for us to be able to visit family.
One of the biggest adventures that we shared this year was taking a vacation to Japan to visit Kelly’s family. Her sister Tracy and her 3 (plus one half) kids were able to come also. We had lots of fun visiting sights around Tokyo, including castles, giant Buddhas, Tokyo Disney Sea, the Tokyo Temple, shopping for electronics, and just being able to spend time with Kelly’s family. It was a great trip and was enjoyed by all.
David is still working at Sony Pictures Imageworks. He got his first on-screen movie credit this year, when Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore was released in July. But for most of the year he has been on the Development Team, which involves programming lots of tools for different needs. He has been able to help out with Green Lantern, The Green Hornet, and Smurfs. Luckily he had great timing and got crewed to Arthur Christmas the week before Christmas and will work on that through February which will help him keep the Christmas spirit year round. In October, David was called as the executive secretary in our church ward. The new calling has been keeping him busy and helping him get to church on time on Sundays, especially while Kelly wasn't there to keep him in line.
Kelly took 3 classes at California State University Los Angeles in the spring, and also completed a few independent study classes in preparation for her return to BYU in the Fall. She lived in Provo for the Fall Semester in order to finish her degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering (feel free to send graduation gifts). While at BYU, she was a member of the ASCE Student Steel Bridge Competition design team. Her steel bridge design will go to the Rocky Mountain Conference competition in April of 2011. She also took the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and recently got her results back: she passed and is officially an Engineer in Training. Earlier in the year, Kelly was called as the Sacrament pianist in our ward. She has developed a great love for the piano and is happy that she still gets to be the primary pianist.
Kelly and David have also been having fun vlogging (vlog = video log) all year long. We are having lots of fun documenting our adventures. It has also been a unique form of communication during our time apart. If you would like to follow our exploits, feel free to check it out at dsdunn.blogspot.com (yes this is a shameless promotion. We want to be YouTube stars one day!)
We hope that during this wonderful time of year, we may all remember the true reason for the season: Jesus Christ. After all, what is Christmas without Christ? Just a bunch of mass! We wish you all the best in everything that you do, and hope that your year was as wonderful as ours.
           With love,
           David and Kelly Dunn

New niece!

So at about 7 or so last night I finally got the call that I've been waiting for: baby time! Julie and I drove up to Salt Lake to stay with Tracy's kids while they went to her midwife to finally have the baby. The kids were mostly in bed, but I think the excitement kept them up. Since Ruth had a long nap she got to stay up late with us while Kenny and Tommy went to bed. We finally got to sleep around midnight, after we'd heard the good news. Kenny woke up around 3 crying so I had to get up and help him with whatever was wrong, I'm still not sure. He wanted to go upstairs and ended up sleeping on the couch the rest of the night. I had to get him up for school at 7. After he left I took a little nap, but I feel like I didn't get enough sleep. But I suppose it was worth it, to be able to see little Helen Grace. Tommy was really funny when he saw the baby. He seemed to think it was great and was very excited. The other kids were excited too, of course.

Home remedy drain unclogger

If you don't want to buy expensive drain cleaners or to pour those harsh chemicals down your drain, try this: pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain, using a little bit of water to wash it down. Then pour 1/2 cup of vinegar down the drain and cover with a stopper to keep it in. About 1/2 hour later, pour some boiling water down the drain to help it clear out.

I decided to do something a little different for the vlog today. I kept wondering what it would look like to photograph the milk jugs at the beginning with a beam of light streaming through them, so I pulled out my camera and took a picture. It was fun to see how many creative ways I could use the flashlight to create images in that small area of our house, so I compiled a photo journal and recorded some ramblings on top of it. Hope you enjoy!

Career Fair awesomeness!

So I went to the career fair today and got to talk to a lot of people. I talked to lots of companies and handed out lots of resumes. I went to an informational meeting later in the night for Kimley-Horn. The guy who came picked out a few resumes for people he wanted to interview. Then he picked out people on the spot from the rest of the people who showed up. The group kept getting smaller and smaller, and amazingly, I got picked! I was very excited to get to finally have an interview. I also got to set up and interview with Hensel Phelps Construction for tomorrow too. We'll see how they go!

Note from Thursday: The interviews went okay. I know I won't get a job with Hensel Phelps, which is okay, because they don't even do design. I told them I want to do design, so pretty much they told me it wasn't going to work out. Oh well. I think my interview with Kimley Horn worked out pretty okay. I didn't do as well as I could have, but I really think something could come from this still. We'll see!

Roofing

So there's a few seconds around 1:56 of weirdness, that's where my hard drive accidentally got unplugged but then youtube decided I could still upload the video anyway, just so you're all aware. You didn't really miss anything important there, I said today is my day to sleep in. Also, i realize now that you can't see the stuff on the roof, but there are packages of shingles and whatnot up there.

David went through the grueling metabolic test...he might have squeaked by with a passing grade, but he Recognized that all his program bubbles were on the wrong scan-Tron grid. Now he has to write a 42 page essay on the answer to the ultimate question. Hopefully he won't fail that too, or else it is time to face the color-stealing, mercenary Dragon Reborn wearing the atium ring of terraport power. Maybe he can weave his way out by Travelling to a Koalic Artificial Intelligence or possibly find a mammal-eating loose seal on ecstasy bread to sate his iPad birthday wish. Which he might find with a Force-powered leap of faith after his penitent prayer to the fallen shaod-stricken gods; remembering to avoid the quiche-seeking shadow-spawning rat king and Lifeless squirrels.

Well for those of you who are lost...and I'm presuming that's anyone who isn't me. I had to breathe through that tube for 10 min and got the results that my metabolism is slightly faster than normal, which is good. I guess that just by living I burn up 2117 calories a day, which doesn't include moving around or dancing (and you all know I can't stop dancing...) So I must eat less calories than that if I want to loose weight, which shouldn't be too hard, if I plan ahead.

So, what does Dave get up to while Kelly is away?

I know you all have a burning desire to know what Dave does with his time while Kelly is away. (While the cats away the mice will play? ...Not quite, more like... We're stuck on a 14 hour flight with no in-flight movie and we forgot our book, so what do we do now?) Well I made this movie to show a little of what I do to occupy myself on those long evenings stuck at home all alone. Hope you enjoy:

Longest day ever

So in addition to the video I wanted to give you a little summary of my day. I got up at 6 AM to drive my mom to the airport so she can go home to Japan. That means I was up bright and early for my first day of classes. I've been emailing the CE department tons over the summer, so when I went in this morning to sign up for my last 2 classes, the secretary upon hearing my name says "Oh, I know exactly who you are." I had 4 classes today: hydrology, reinforced concrete design, intro to transportation engineering, and senior design. I'm excited to be able to design a steel bridge in our senior design class for Rocky Mountain Conference, which is an annual competion between schools in the rocky mountain area. I'm really stoked about that. All my classes were fine today, and I think I'll be okay this semester. I have one class tomorrow, Bridge Design, which should be really interesting and hopefully not too hard. Then Dave wanted me to go get this new book for him at the midnight release at the BYU Bookstore. So essentially I've been up for 19 hours at this point, although I did take a light nap in the middle of the day. Either way, it was a long long day.

Catalina Diving!!

We took a day to go over to Catalina Island, which is about an hour east of shore by boat. It's a pretty big tourist destination, especially for SCUBA divers. The giant kelp grows there, so it's teeming with life. We got to see lots of fish on our dive, including a few Bat Rays. The giant sea bass were in town, but we didn't' get to see any, which I'm not sure if I'm happy or sad about. The bass are 2 or 3 times the size of a person! Crazy. I'm not big on fish, so that's why I'm not too upset about it. BUt we had a good time and ended up getting a little sunburn unawares because it was such a cool day. Oops!

Sparks, Friends, and Screaming

It was fun to be able to take Kristi, Jon and my parents to a Sparks game down at the Staples Center. We were lucky enough to get seats in front of 2 or 3 screaming little girls, who I'm sure were just there to cheer and don't really care about basketball. Although I commend them for their diligence and team spirit, they really need to practice cheering with everyone else. So every time it gets really noisy or the yells of "defense!" are off, please know that it is them, and not us. The Sparks won this game 88-72 edit by David: final score was 82-77, although it was a close back and forth game the whole time. We took a little walk through LA Live afterward. We hung out over at the Toyota thing you see at the end. They had a decked out Sienna van in there with reclining middle seats, complete with footrests. It had video screens in front and back where they were playing the "Swagger Wagon" video (youtube it if you haven't seen it). The seats in back fold down into the ground with the touch of a button. It was a pretty sweet van, I have to admit. All in all, it was a great night!
